Also known as "happy air" or gas & air
You breathe a gentle mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a soft nosepiece. Within minutes, you feel calm, relaxed and a little floaty - while staying fully awake and able to talk to us throughout.
Deeper relaxation through a small cannula
A sedative is given through a tiny cannula in your hand or arm. You'll stay conscious and able to respond, but deeply relaxed - and most people remember very little of the appointment afterwards.
*Following inhalation sedation, we confirm you're fully recovered before you leave. All sedation is provided in line with the national IACSD Standards for Conscious Sedation in Dentistry (2020) and SDCEP guidance.
Our sedation service is open access - anyone can use it. There are two simple routes:
Call or email the practice and speak to Arina, our Patient Care Coordinator. No registration, no referral, no waiting for paperwork - we'll arrange your sedation assessment and take it from there.
If you're an NHS patient elsewhere, your dentist can refer you to us for NHS sedation. You stay registered with your own practice - we simply provide the sedation part of your care, then send you back with a full report.
We believe you should know exactly what to expect before you book - whichever route you choose.
NHS patient charges are set by the NHS Scotland Statement of Dental Remuneration and apply where your dental treatment is provided on the NHS. Figures shown are the current published charges and may be updated by the NHS from time to time.
The cost of your dental treatment itself is quoted separately after your assessment, so you'll have a full written plan and total price before anything goes ahead.

No - this is conscious sedation, not a general anaesthetic. You remain awake and able to respond throughout, but deeply relaxed. With IV sedation, most people remember very little afterwards, which many patients say is the best part.
Yes. Conscious sedation has an excellent safety record when provided by a trained team in accordance with national standards. Every patient has a full pre-sedation assessment, and you're continuously monitored throughout treatment in line with IACSD (2020) and SDCEP guidance.
After inhalation sedation - yes, once we've confirmed you're fully recovered. After IV sedation - no. A responsible adult must bring you, take you home, and stay with you, and you must not drive, work, or make important decisions for 24 hours.
Inhalation sedation ("happy air") is widely used to help anxious children accept treatment comfortably. Suitability is always confirmed at an assessment appointment first.
Absolutely. Our service is open access. Come to us privately without any referral, or ask your dentist to refer you for NHS sedation. Either way, you stay registered with your own practice for your ongoing care.
We accept sedation referrals from practices across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire for both inhalation sedation and IV sedation. Patients remain registered with your practice - we provide the sedation episode of care and return them to you with a full clinical report.
